AMD Radeon HD 6970 and HD 6950 launch assault on enthusiast gaming market

It's taken AMD a long time to refresh the top end of its graphics hardware, but today's culmination to that wait has to be described as somewhat bittersweet. Sweet, because we're finally getting a successor to the venerable HD 5870, one that offers improved power management and tessellation performance at a lower $369 price point, but also bitter because in terms of sheer firepower, the Radeon series doesn't seem to have made quite the leap many of us had hoped for. The new top of AMD's single-GPU pile, the HD 6970, offers 1,536 stream processors, an 880MHz core clock speed, and 2GB of GDDR5 RAM running at 5.5GHz for a total of 176GBps of memory bandwidth. Its partner in crime, the HD 6950, is expected to list at $299, for which saving you'll have to sacrifice some clock speed (down to 800MHz) and processing units (1,408 in total). There's a neat little addition to both new boards: a Dual-BIOS switch that will act like Google's hardware jailbreak toggle on the Cr-48, allowing tweakers to unlock the extra (unprotected by warranty!) performance headroom in their cards.

Early reviews all seem to agree that both the Radeon HD 6970 and HD 6950 have struck a very fine price-to-performance ratio. The 6970 manages to spar with the much pricier GTX 580, but given that it's priced similarly to NVIDIA's GTX 570, it scores plaudits for being a more than viable alternative. The HD 6950 is seen as the real value item here, however, particularly since it occupies a relatively unique spot in the price range, and most reviewers tipped it as their new bang-for-the-buck leader.

This was also the year that Leica released its first digital scanning back, the S1. This bad boy was designed for the company's 35mm R-series lenses (with lens mounts for a number of other manufacturer's optics) and captured 1.4-inch square images. And what did you get for your $21,500? A camera that operated at ISO 50 and produced 48-bit (151Mb) image files with "little if any of the artifacting, blooming, and fringing that continue to plague us to this very day," according to B&H. Hitachi Global Storage Technologies launches its new Hitachi XL desktop external hard drive with 3TB capacity and USB 2.0 connectivity. The drive works with both PC and Mac offering huge storage capacity to store or backup their growing music libraries, digital photos and movie collections.

The Hitachi XL can be placed vertically or horizontally. It is also available in 1TB and 2TB. The prices are are $249.99 for 3TB, $169.99 for 2TB and $99.99 for 1TB.

Hitachi also releases the Deskstar Internal Hard Drive Kits that packs a Deskstar 7K3000 hard drive, mounting screws, step-by-step instructions, and a software download that allows 32- and 64-bit Microsoft Windows, Apple OS X and Linux systems to tap into the full capacity and power of the 3TB drive, as one big massive data drive, without having to install extra hardware. The 7K3000 drive has 64MB cache memory and a 6Gb/s SATA interface. The price is $249.99 for 3TB and there is 2TB model.

Foremay intros world's fastest 1.8-inch SSD

Foremay today announced that it is now shipping a slim SSD with standard 1.8" micro SATA SSD interface. Though at just 5mm it is pretty small in size, the SSD is actually very potent. Foremay claims it is the world's fastest 1.8-inch SSD.

Acer Aspire RevoView 1080p media streamer packs HDD bay

Acer has injected some of their nettop DNA into a new network-capable media player, the Acer Aspire RevoView. The STB is capable of Full HD playback from local storage – either on memory card, USB drive or in the user-accesible 3.5-inch hard-drive bay – or streamed over the network via the RevoView’s ethernet port.

Ports include two full-sized USB 2.0, HDMI, 10/100 ethernet, S/PDIF optical digital, component and composite, along with a miniUSB port for hooking the RevoView up to a PC and treating it as an external hard-drive. There’s also a multi-format memory card reader on the front.

Up to 2TB drives can be installed inside, and the RevoView will work with UPnP/DLNA streaming sources. The compatible file types and codecs includes MKV, MP4, H.264 and ISO – there’s a full list in the gallery below – and the STB itself is expected to go on sale in the UK on November 8 for £119.99 ($194).
